According to Yicai news, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang’s creator Moonton Games has prevailed in a case brought against Tencent for commercial defamation.

In response to a 2019 lawsuit, the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court decided in favor of Moonton. Legal records showed that Tencent had lied in letters written to one of Moonton’s business partners in Indonesia in 2018.

Tencent will be required to reimburse the plaintiff for “economic damages and reasonable expenses” in the amount of CNY220,000 (about US$30,000 or 1.8mil pesos).

Defamation Lawsuit

According to the information in the report, Tencent’s Indonesian-based attorney informed RevivalTV, the plaintiff’s Indonesian partner, in letters sent in 2018 about the company’s CNY19.4 million (about US$2.9 million) victory in a non-compete and non-disclosure agreement case brought against then-CEO Xu Zhenhua.

Xu started Moonton Games in 2014 while working for Tencent.

The letter claimed that Xu had violated “trade secrets” in order to create Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and claimed that their games Honor of Kings and Arena of Valor had been copied. According to legal filings, these letters were written in an effort to reduce Moonton’s influence in the nation.

The court record stressing the fact that the dispute exclusively concerned Xu’s non-compete and non-disclosure agreement was what led to the counterclaim as a result. Whether he used the business’s trade secrets to create Mobile Legends has not been decided.

A copyright legal dispute is currently being fought between the two businesses. League of Legends and League of Legends: Wild Rift were allegedly copied in numerous ways by the MLBB developer, according to a complaint filed in May 2022 by Tencent-owned Riot Games, a North American firm.

The 35-page public document for Riot Games’ case is available on Scribd.
